U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin is defending secrecy by the Obama administration involving undocumented child immigrants sent to Iowa, saying he fears disclosure of information would lead to anti-immigration protests at the homes of families sheltering the young people. \n\n\n\x3cp>“These kids need to be protected, housed and kept safe. They don’t need to be made public objects,” Harkin told Iowa reporters Thursday in a weekly telephone conference call.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>Harkin, an Iowa Democrat, noted a recent incident in California where angry protesters turned away three Homeland Security buses transporting undocumented immigrants from Texas to be processed in Murrieta. The buses were redirected to Border Patrol stations in the San Diego area.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>President Barack Obama’s administration has been criticized by Gov. Terry Branstad and U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, both Iowa Republicans, for a lack of information about children from Central America who are being sent to Iowa after being detained by the U.S. Border Patrol. Officials from the U.S. Department of Human Services this week confirmed that at least 139 unaccompanied immigrant children have arrived in Iowa since Jan. 1, but no other details have been provided.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>More than 57,000 children have crossed the Mexican border into the United States since Oct. 1, mostly from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Officials say they are fleeing gang violence and extreme poverty. Instead, Obama will visit the home of Austin-based filmmaker Robert Rodriguez this week as part of a trio of Texas fundraisers. The Austin visit features tickets ranging in price from $5,000 to $32,400. The July 9 fundraiser also will feature actors Rosario Dawson, Danny Trejo and Jessica Alba. Both Trejo and Alba star in Rodriguez’s ultra-violent Machete franchise. Largely from Central America, they are now arriving at a rate of more than 35,000 a month. The number of children and teenagers traveling alone from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador is expected to reach up to 90,000 across the Southwest border by the end of the year, along with a surge of families with children seeking safe passage into the U.S. Officials believe smugglers use some families as decoys to divert authorities’ attention from other migrants crossing elsewhere. There are also health concerns of dangerous and communicable diseases being brought into the country. Nonetheless, all this will be used by Obama, White House, Democrats and Liberal Media to demonize those who protest for maintaining sanity in the land.
