COLUMBIA, SC — Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham is facing a closer race over his Democratic rival than fellow Palmetto State GOP senator, Tim Scott, according to a new poll.
Graham leads with 37 percent in his race to Democratic state Sen. Brad Hutto’s 28 percent, according to the poll by YouGov, The New York Times and CBS.
Graham’s lead over Hutto grows when voters leaning Republican versus Democrat are added. The Seneca Republican holds a 42 percent-29 percent edge over the Orangeburg Democrat with leaning-voter tallies included.
Hutto is receiving much of his support from voters ages 30 to 44. Graham dominates voters 45 and older.
The race is closer, in part, because of petition candidate Thomas Ravenel. The Charleston reality television star and former state treasurer who left office after a cocaine arrest received 8 percent.
Candidates have a chance to win some voters: One of five polled said they are undecided. Most unsure voters said they are moderates. Women also made up a larger share of undecided voters.
But the YouGov survey includes a higher percentage of voters who say they are independent (41 percent) than from CNN’s 2010 election exit polls (23 percent).
Meanwhile, Scott holds a commanding lead at 52 percent over Democratic Richland County councilwoman Joyce Dickerson, who received 31 percent.
